Georgia Milestones

GMAS General Information
What are the Georgia Milestones?
Georgia Milestones is a set of tests given to students from 3rd grade through high school. These tests show how well students understand what they’ve been learning in school in English language arts (reading and writing), math, science, and social studies.
Who takes Milestones?
All students in grades 3-8, plus those in four specific high school courses take Milestones. The Georgia Alternate Assessment is given to students whose IEP committees determine Milestones is not appropriate.
What does the test look like?
- Georgia Milestones is administered primarily on the computer and includes the following features:
- Technology-enhanced items in all grades and courses
- Open-ended (constructed response) items in English language arts in all grades and courses
- A writing component (in response to passages read by students) at every grade level and course within the English language arts assessment
- A reported Lexile score based on the English language arts assessment in all grades and courses, and estimated norm-referenced performance ranges for all grades and courses.
- Our entire school community has been working hard all year to equip students with the tools for success in their classes and to prepare them for a strong performance on the Georgia Milestones Assessment System End of Grade Assessment.
Why Georgia Milestones Matters for Your Child:
Shows how your child is doing: The test gives information about your child’s progress and helps determine if they’re ready for the next grade.
- Important for promotion: In grades 3, 5, and 8, Milestones scores are part of the promotion requirements.
- Counts toward high school grades: For certain high school courses, the test makes up 10% of the final grade.
- Helps schools improve: Results help teachers and schools see what is working and what needs to change.
- Measures learning of state standards: The test shows how well students have learned the knowledge and skills outlined in the state standards.
- Supports better teaching: Teachers use the results to adjust lessons and improve instruction.
- Identifies strengths and areas to grow: This helps schools plan programs to give students the support they need.
What can I do to help my student at home?
- Allow your student to take the practice test at home, so they are comfortable with the format of the assessment.
- Send your students to school every day that they are healthy.
- Ensure they get a good night's sleep the night before the assessment.
- Make sure your student is present on the days the test will be given.
- get a smooth, calm start to the day at home.
- Have them eat a good breakfast with protein at home or at school.
- Know your student and what they need.
- Assure your student that this is only one test.
- Show confidence that your student has been working hard all year; this is an opportunity to show what they've learned this year.
